چکیده

We present UBV RI broad band, Hα narrow band photometry of the star forming complexes in the infra-red bright galaxy NGC 1084. Results of medium resolution spectroscopy of some of the brighter complexes are also discussed. Spectroscopic data is used to better estimate the internal reddening within the galaxy which is found to be highly variable and to calculate metallicity which is close to the solar value. Diagnostic diagram identifies the shocked regions within this galaxy. The narrow band Hα flux and its equivalent width are used to determine the star formation rates of the complexes and the distribution of ages. Star formation rates for a few of the complexes are found to be as high as 0.5 M⊙yr . The star forming complexes lie in the age range 3 Myr to 6.5 Myr. U − B vs V − I colour-colour mixed population model created using the Starburst99 model colours is used to estimate the ages of the stellar populations present within these regions. Using this technique, it is found that the star formation in NGC 1084 has taken place in a series of short bursts over the last 40 Myr or so. It is proposed that the likely trigger for enhanced star formation is merger with a gas rich dwarf galaxy.

Strong non - circular motions of gas in the spiral galaxy NGC 1084 ?

The results of Hα and [NII]λ6583 observations of the spiral galaxy NGC 1084 at the SAO 6m telescope with a Fabry-Perot interferometer are presented. The complex structure of the emission line profile has revealed the presence of giant star formation regions (“spur”) in the NE part of the galaxy. In this region the Hα line shows two distinct components, with line-of-sight velocity differences of...

A Spitzer study of star-forming regions in Virgo Cluster galaxies

We present a preliminary study of the star formation distribution within three Virgo Cluster galaxies using the 24 μm Spitzer observations from the Spitzer Survey of Virgo (SPITSOV) in combination with Hα observations. The purpose of our study is to explore the relationship between the star formation distribution within galaxies and the type (and phase) of interactions experienced within the cl...

The Star Formation History of NGC 6822

Images of five fields in the Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822 obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope in the F555W and F814W filters are presented. Three of the fields lie mostly within the central bar of NGC 6822 where most of the sites of current star formation are concentrated while two other fields sample more of the outer regions of the galaxy. Photometry for the stars in these...

H I and CO observations of Arp 104 : a spiral – elliptical interacting pair

We present data probing the spatial and kinematical distribution of both the atomic (H I) and molecular (CO) gas in NGC 5218, the late-type barred spiral galaxy in the spiral–elliptical interacting pair, Arp 104. We consider these data in conjunction with far-infrared and radiocontinuum data, and N-body simulations, to study the galaxies interactions, and the star formation properties of NGC 52...

Mid- to Far-IR Emission and Star Formation in Early-Type Galaxies

Many early-type galaxies have been detected at wavelengths of 24 to 160μm but the emission is usually dominated by heating from an AGN or from the evolved stellar population. Here we present Spitzer MIPS observations of a sample of elliptical and lenticular galaxies that are rich in cold molecular gas, and we investigate whether the MIR to FIR emission could be associated with star formation ac...
